Glossary of Sleep-related terms

Homeostasis has been defined as the "coordinated physiological processes which maintain most of the steady states in the organism" (Cannon, 1939). The term 'sleep homeostasis' refers to the sleep-wake dependent aspect of sleep regulation. Thus homeostatic mechanisms counteract deviations of sleep from an average "reference level" by augmenting sleep propensity when sleep is curtailed or absent, and reducing sleep propensity in response to excess sleep.3
