He is President of the Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS), Assistant Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) and Co-Chiar of the WASM World Sleep Day Committee.
Member of the Editorial Board of the journals SLEEP MEDICINE and SLEEP DISORDERS.
Member of the European Sleep Research Society.
Member of the Ethical Committee of the Parma University Hospital.
Co-author of over 180 articles (ISI Web of Science), on sleep medicine with H-Index: 36.

Vice-Chair and ESRS Board Representative

Prof. Dr. Johan Verbraecken is medical coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Sleep Disorders Centre  of the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA), and expert in the field of respiratory sleep medicine for more than 20 years. At the same time he is visiting professor at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). Currently he is president of the Belgian Association for Sleep research and  Sleep medicine, past chair of the Sleep and Control of Breathing Group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and past ERS E-Learning Director. He is chair or member of different ERS Task Forces in the field of respiratory sleep medicine, and is also engaged as chair of the ERS Training Centre Accreditation Review Committee. He is author or coauthor of more than 100 scientific papers and book chapters related to sleep and breathing.

Dr. Erna Sif Arnardóttir
Reykjavik, Iceland

Dr. Erna Sif Arnardottir is the Director of Sleep Measurements at the Landspitali – The National University Hospital of Iceland and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Iceland. Currently she is the President of the Icelandic Sleep Research Society. She is the coordinator of the launch of the ESRS Early Career Research Network and a member of the ERS/ESRS Taskforce ”Technical Standards for the scoring of respiratory events using type III devices for the diagnosis of sleep disordered breathing”. She is author or coauthor of 13 published peer-reviewed paper and one book chapter. Her main research interests are the adverse physical effects of sleep disordered breathing from snoring to obstructive sleep apnea, the standardization of sleep measurements and scoring methods as well as the relationship between circadian rhythm and sleep.

Dr. Barbara Gnidovec Stražišar is a board certified paedatrician, child neurologist and expert in sleep medicine with almost two decades experience in working with children and adolescents with sleep disorders. She recieved her somnology traninig by Marie Josephe Challamel in Child Sleep Research Unit at Centre hospitalier Lyon-Sud in Lyon and Dr. Richard Ferber at Centre for Pediatric Sleep Disorders in Children’s Hospital Boston. Currently she is the president of the Slovenian Sleep Society and the head of Paediatric department in General Hospital Celje where is located the only accredited Center for Paediatric Sleep Disorders in Slovenia. She is furthermore part-time researcher in the Centre for Sleep Disorders at the Institute for Clinical Neurophysiology in University Medical Centre Ljubljana. Her main research interests are circadian rhythm disorders and sleep in children with neurodevelopmental delay.

MD, PhD Michaela D. Gjerstad is a board certified neurologist and head of the outpatient clinic of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital of Stavanger, Norway. She is furthermore part-time engaged at the National Competency Centre for Sleep Disorders at the University Hospital of Bergen, Norway and the Norwegian Centre for Movement Disorders at the University Hospital of Stavanger. Currently she is the President of the Norwegian Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine. She is author or co-author of 20 peer-reviewed papers. The main interest are sleep disorders in neurodegenerative diseases, hypersomnias, parasomnias and RLS.

Head of Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine Departments in the Hospital CUF Porto, Porto-Portugal where there is ongoing research in Neuro-Psychiatry and Sleep; Oncology and Sleep and the Non pharmacological treatments of insomnia.
