List of Participants for 2010

The Programme Committee of the ESRS-EU Marie Curie Program (R. Amici, Coordinator; C. Bassetti, A. Hillmann, D. Pevernagie, T. Pollmächer, T. Porkka-Heiskanen, D.J. Skene) has selected candidates for the 2010 Program. The call for candidates was very successful, with 70 applications being submitted. The large number of high quality applications made the job of selecting just 43 participants very difficult and very strict criteria, largely suggested by EU, have been followed, aimed at assuring a widespread participation of trainees in terms of their nationality or the Insitution in which they are currently working. Thus, unfortunately, many very good applications could not be selected.

The following criteria have been followed for selection, in order of priority:

  1. date of the degree giving access to doctoral studies (priority was given to early stage trainees who obtained their degree giving access to a PhD Program within the last four years);
  2. quality of candidate, based on both their CV and their reference letter (the assessment was made by three independent scorers);
  3. ESRS membership;
  4. citizenship of an European Country;
  5. citizenship of a Country with a less developed tradition in sleep research/medicine;
  6. in case of equal candidates, the younger candidate was selected.

Three further balancing post-hoc criteria were used:

  • an arbitrary quality threshold for entering the program was set at 20% of the maximum level for quality;
  • a maximum of five candidates who were nationals of the same country were accepted;
  • a maximum of three candidates coming from the same laboratory/clinic were accepted.

According to these criteria, the following candidates were selected
